Wings Over Costa Rico - Itinerary for 12 Days

Costa Rica, Country of Central America. Its Capital is San José.

San José is currently Costa Rica's tourist site where visitors from around the world meet. This capital city is flooded with places of historic, artistic, development and cultural interest. Among the historic sites in San José is the National Museum, founded in 1887. It's a rugged, rain-forested Central American country with coastlines on the Caribbean and Pacific. Though its capital, San Jose, is home to cultural institutions like the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, Costa Rica is known for its beaches, volcanoes, and biodiversity. Roughly a quarter of its area is made up of protected jungle, teaming with wildlife including spider monkeys and many birds.

Lodging at the Hotel Bouganvillea - (Day 1)

A Hotel Inside a Garden With Restaurant, Bar/Lounge

Only about 20 min from the airport,  it's a hotel inside a garden with 10 acres of the most beautiful gardens in Costa Rica.  Rooms have balconies overlooking the grounds or city. The hotel’s beautiful gardens are home to a huge range of native Costa Rican trees and flowers. Experiencing Costa Rica: with a stroll in the beautiful tropical gardens; enjoying the fragrance of Costa Rica's refreshing air. 


The highlight was the extensive gardens which is home to lots of birds and great for bird photography, along with the great variety of tropical plants, including heliconias, bromeliads, orchids and trees attract butterflies and birds which brighten the environment with their colors and sounds.

We enjoyed a welcome meeting and introduction to "Birds of Costa Rica" by Nigel Marven and Johan Fernandez, our hosts for our "11-day tour" of bird watching.

Thankfully there are a lot of birds to be found in our ten acres of gardens but this one stand out!

Quincho is a Life-Size Sculpture

No visit to the Hotel Bougainvillea is complete without a photo op with our resident celebrity, Quincho. Rain or shine, he can always be found in the botanical garden taking a load off his tired feet. He’s happy to make space for you on his bench, and he’s a great listener no matter what language you speak.

Look Out Tower

The garden can be seen on the look out tower and is an ongoing project, it has taken 28 years to get where it is today and things are constantly changing!

Visit the Central Bank's building, which also houses the fascinating Pre-Columbian Gold Museum. 

As we wandered around San Jose we found these! We took a bunch of photos . Obviously  they were more important than we initially realized, these statues help signify culture and socio-economic history of Costa Ricans.

Naked Fat Lady Statue

La Gorda Gertrudis La Gorda Gertrudis is a large bronze sculpture by the famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero. It sits in the centre of the Plaza Santo Domingo and is a great photo opportunity.

It is part of a series of public art statues found in various places around downtown.

We stopped and tried their specialty coffee, produced by microbeneficios in Costa Rica. To witness why they were the "winners of the Cup of Excellence".

San José, Costa Rica Wants to Become a Friendlier Modern City

It's official “city brand” with a large sculpture of “SJO ¡Vive!” , (San José Lives), in an act in the Central Park of the capital city and with the objective of attracting tourism.

University of Costa Rica...

Lots of statues around the campus to look at and learn the history of the university.
You will also be able to walk the many trails around campus.
The university has definitely integrated nature into campus life as they also offer a guided nature walk so you can learn more about the animals in the local area.

The famous sunflower mural on the building of the Escuela de Estudios Generales at Ciudad Universitaria Rodrigo Facio.

The Best University in Costa Rica. It is worth seeing it if you have time. Also, there is a small chance of seeing sloths. 

But if you are interested in science, you will find scientists with the highest standard worldwide.

The University of Costa Rica (Spanish: Universidad de Costa Rica, abbreviated UCR) is a public university in the Republic of Costa Rica, in Central America. 

The students are very friendly and enjoy practicing their English speaking skills so the area feels a bit more welcoming to foreigners.

Is primarily under the stewardship of Incofer (Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles), an autonomous institution of the state. Incofer owns the national railway infrastructure and operates virtually all freight and passenger services, which consist primarily of commuter trains through the highly populated Central Valley.

This is a very small strip of land that is designated as a park commemorating the electoral freedom of Costa Rica.

It's a popular spot for both locals and tourists to enjoy outdoor activities.

According to our tour guide It is regarded as a very important plaza of course with the building that it is in front of: Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones. It came into existence after the decision was taken to abolish the army. Disputes will be decided by elections.

Parque Nacional is a national park located in San Jose, known for its lush green spaces, monuments, and pathways that provide a peaceful retreat from the urban environment. 

The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum...

 The gold collection dates from 300 to 400 BC to 1550 AD. The collection includes animal (notably frogs, eagles, jaguars, alligators, deers) figurines, amulets, earrings, erotic statuettes and several dioramas including El Guerrero, a life sized gold warrior figure adorned with gold ornaments in a glass case and a detailed scale model of a Pre-Columbian village.

The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum is a museum in San José, Costa Rica. It is located in a subterranean building underneath the "Plaza de la Cultura" and is owned and curated by the Banco Central de Costa Rica.

The museum has an archaeological collection of 3,567 Pre-Columbian artifacts made up of 1,922 ceramic pieces, 1,586 gold objects, 46 stone objects, 4 jade, and 9 glass or bead objects.

The excellent museum has The pre Columbian Museo, the Museo de Oro and an art exhibit all under one roof. It is a very interesting building as well as the museum. The Pre Columbian and Museo de Oro were very educational.
