San José is currently Costa Rica's tourist site where visitors from around the world meet. This capital city is flooded with places of historic, artistic, development and cultural interest. Among the historic sites in San José is the National Museum, founded in 1887. It's a rugged, rainforested Central American country with coastlines on the Caribbean and Pacific. Though its capital, San Jose, is home to cultural institutions like the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, Costa Rica is known for its beaches, volcanoes, and biodiversity. Roughly a quarter of its area is made up of protected jungle, teeming with wildlife including spider monkeys and quetzal birds.

Since 1920, the Colonial Church of Orosi has been a historical-architectural heritage site in Costa Rica. It was declared a National Monument in 1985. The Iglesia Colonial Orosi is one of the few places which survived the earth quakes – this church was built in 1767 and not rebuilt. It's the oldest that is still in use church in Costa Rica. Quite often it will be in use if you visit.

This is a perfect activity for the people that love other wildlife besides birds. It is a post-dinner activity where you will spend a couple of hours with a guide exploring the grounds and forest trails in search of a whole range of interesting creatures less likely to be found by day. This tour has a strong focus on insects, Arachnids, Amphibians and Reptiles but with nocturnal bird and mammal sightings possible.

There are around 12,000 species of moths found in Costa Rica so you can imagine the sizable amount that arrives when they turn on the light, at night. If the light is left on all night, insect-feeding birds arrive at dawn to feed on the insects and moths.

The violet sabrewing is the largest hummingbird in Middle America. Has a thick arched bill, and big, flashy white tail feathers. The male's amazing purple plumage often looks blackish overall, but when it catches the light, it's vibrant purple.

A unique feature of Rancho Naturalista as a birdwatching lodge in Costa Rica is the presence of the hummingbird pools. The naturally formed shallow pools located in a stream near the lodge offer spectacular views of hummingbirds (as well as other types of birds) bathing and coming to drink. From the viewing platform, one can expect various species coming to the pools especially in the late afternoon. Snowcap, Crowned Woodnymph and Purple-crowned Fairy are frequent visitors and with some luck one might even spot a White-tipped Sicklebill or other rarity.
