CANYONLANDS ESCAPE, WEST - #123

Zion National Park

Zion National Park is a southwest Utah nature preserve distinguished by Zion Canyon’s steep red cliffs. Zion Canyon Scenic Drive cuts through its main section, leading to forest trails along the Virgin River.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Bryce Canyon National Park, a sprawling reserve in southern Utah, is known for crimson-colored hoodoos, which are spire-shaped rock formations. The park’s main road leads past the expansive Bryce Amphitheater, a hoodoo-filled depression lying below the Rim Trail hiking path.

Arches National Park

Moab Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park

Arches National Park lies north of Moab in the state of Utah. Bordered by the Colorado River in the southeast, Bryce Canyon National Park, a sprawling reserve in southern Utah. Arches National Park known as the site of more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches, such as the massive, red-hued Delicate Arch in the east.

Moab Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park

Moab Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park

We visited the Navajo Nation’s Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. We  experienced one of the most majestic and "most photographed – points" on earth. This great valley boasts sandstone masterpieces that tower at heights of 400 to 1,000 feet located on the border of Arizona and Utah's Bryce Canyon National Park &

Zion National Park - beautiful!

Hoodoos in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

a sign that says hoodoos around the world bizarre, whimsical

In Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, a hoodoo (also called a tent rock, fairy chimney, or earth pyramid) is a tall, thin spire of rock formed by erosion. Hoodoos typically consist of relatively soft rock topped by harder, less easily eroded stone that protects each column from the elements.

Hoodoos in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah generally form within sedimentary rock and volcanic rock formations.

Hoodoos range in size from the height of an average human to heights exceeding a 10-story building. Hoodoo shapes are affected by the erosional patterns of alternating hard and softer rock layers. Minerals deposited within different rock types can cause hoodoos to have different colors throughout their height.

Hoodoos (irregular columns of rock)

In certain regions of western North America these rocky structures are called hoodoos. The name is derived from Hoodoo spirituality, in which certain natural forms are said to possess certain powers, but by the late 19th century, this spirituality became associated with bad luck if taken from Bryce Canyon National Park.

The park’s main road leads past the expansive Bryce Amphitheater, a hoodoo-filled depression lying below the Rim Trail hiking path.

It has overlooks at Sunrise Point, Sunset Point, Inspiration Point and Bryce Point. Prime viewing times are around sunup and sundown.   Red Rocks, Pink Cliffs, and Endless Vistas  are present at the Bryce Canyon National Park.

Bryce Canyon National Park is much smaller and sits at a much higher elevation than nearby Zion Park

a large group of rock formations in the desert

Bryce Canyon National Park is distinctive due to geological structures called hoodoos, formed by frost weathering and stream erosion of the river and lake bed sedimentary rocks.

The red, orange, and white colors of the rocks provide spectacular views for park visitors.

The Paiutes

a sign describing the history of the indians

The Paiutes trace their origin to the story of Tabuts, the wise wolf who decided to carve many different people out of sticks. His plan was to scatter them evenly around the earth so that everyone would have a good place to live, but Tabuts had a mischievous younger brother, Shinangwav the coyote. Shinangway cut open the sack and people fell out in bunches all over the world. The people were angry at this treatment, and that is why other people always fight. The people left in the sack were the Southern Paiutes. Tabuts blessed them and put them in the very best place in Bryce Canyon National Park.

As the technology of electric power transmission improved, the Lower Colorado was considered for its hydroelectric-power potential. In 1902, the Edison Electric Company of Los Angeles surveyed the river in the hope of building a 40-foot (12 m) rock dam which could generate 10,000 horsepower (7,500 kW).

Began construction of the dam in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The torrid summer weather and lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned the dam over to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule.
