OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY...

Nearly 400 years ago the history of the Passion Play began.

A large group of people sitting in front of a building

In 1633 the Oberammergau villagers promised to perform the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ every tenth year, in so far as no one was to die of the plague anymore.

Since its first production it has been performed on open-air stages in the village.

The play is a staging of Jesus' passion, covering the short final period of his life from his visit to Jerusalem and leading to his execution by crucifixion.

The production involves over 2,000 people: actors, musicians, stage technicians, and others, all residents of the village.

The Wittelsbachs used the castle for bear hunting or as a retreat for agnatic princes. In 1743 it was plundered by Austrian troops. In the German mediatization the county of Schwangau became officially a part of the Electorate of Bavaria in 1803.

Seven weeks after the death of King Ludwig II in 1886, Neuschwanstein was opened to the public. The shy king had built the castle in order to withdraw from public life – now vast numbers of people came to view his private refuge.

As it turns out, after visiting Neuschwanstein with his wife while on vacation in Bavaria, Walt Disney was inspired by the 19th-century castle and put his own spin on it for his movies. Now known as the "Disney castle," Neuschwanstein is busier than ever with tourists.
