This is the second smallest independent state in the world (after the Vatican) and is entirely urban - Monte Carlo.

Great way to see Monco!    Easy to hop on and off and catch the next bus. We only had a short time in Monaco so we couldn't take advantage of it in Monte Carlo.

Monaco

Monaco, officially the Principality of Monaco is an independent and sovereign country located on the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is surrounded on land by its neighbor France, and Italy's borders are just 10 miles away.

Monaco’s tiny territory occupies a set of densely clustered hills and a headland that looks southward over the Mediterranean. Many unusual features, however, have made Monaco among the most luxurious tourist resorts in the world and have given it a fame far exceeding its size because of the Monaco Grand Prix.

Monaco’s chief industry is tourism, and its facilities make it one of Europe’s most luxurious resorts. Once a winter attraction, it now draws summer visitors as well to its beaches and expanded mooring facilities. Business conferences are especially important.

More than one-fourth of Monaco’s population is composed of French citizens, and a smaller but significant number are Italian, Swiss, and Belgian. Only about one-fifth of the population claims Monegasque descent. Most of the people are Roman Catholics. The official language is French. Plus they enjoy the Old Quarter.

Shop at the wide variety of designer stores, visit the stunning Prince's Palace of Monaco and walk where Formula 1 fans delight to see the Circuit de Monaco.

Try your luck at the beautiful Monte Carlo Casino!

The Monaco Cathedral (Cathedrale de Monaco), also known as Saint Nicholas Cathedral, was built in Monte Carlo around 1875 on the site of a medieval church built in the 13th century. It is in Monaco Ville, near the Oceanographic Museum. The facade of the church, in blocks of polished white stone, is full of delicate carves. You need to walk up the steps to the entrance. At the center of the cathedral is an altar, and the mosaic apse that shows the Virgin Mary holding Jesus on her lap.

Our excursion started just outside the ship on our large luxury bus that took us on a six-hour tour from the port in Nice, France all the way to Monaco and back.

We had our own personal tour guide who gave us much information as we traveled along our long journey to our destination and explained the Monaco Grand Prix race to us.

We enjoyed a guided walk through the Old Quarter and along the portion of the Grand Prix Motor circuit.
