While the bulk of the Berlin Wall has long been built over, Mödlareuth, population 50, kept its 11-foot-high, half-mile long concrete wall, barbed-wire fence, shoot-to-kill death strip and two watchtowers as an outdoor memorial - German vacation.

Mödlareuth was known as “the village at the end of the world” and “Little Berlin” during the Cold War due to its precarious location straddling Communist East and capitalist West. Best German Vacations!

Our venture starts in Historic Munchenreuth...

Munchenreuth in the region of Bavaria is located in Germany - some 159 mi or ( 256 km ) South-West of Berlin, the country's capital city.

The northern part was in East Germany and the southern part in West Germany. It was called "Little Berlin" by the Americans, as the town was divided between east and west, just like Berlin was.

This museum shows the history of the village...

Mödlareuth is a German village.

A poster of a city in German

Mödlareuth is a German village situated partly in Bavaria and partly in Thuringia. The northern part was in East Germany and the southern part in West Germany. The Thuringian part of the village belongs to Gefell while the Bavarian part belongs to Töpen.

It was called Little Berlin by the Americans because a wall divided it, like the Berlin Wall divided Berlin. Now a museum shows the history of the village and gives

information about the political system at that time. Cold War museums in Germany, Geography of Bavaria, Geography of Thuringia, Inner German border, Museums in Bavaria, Museums in Thuringia, Open air museums in Germany - Best German Vacations!

Nuremberg City in Germany...

Nuremberg is the second-largest city of the German state of Bavaria after its capital Munich, and its 518,370 inhabitants make it the 14th-largest city in Germany.

Impressive, exciting, colorful, mighty and tragic: Nuremberg has reflected German history since the Middle Ages.

The city lies about 170 kilometres (110 mi) north of Munich on our wonderful German vacation!

Restrictions of imports and exports deprived the city of many markets for its manufactures in the past.

The state of affairs in the early 16th century, increased trade routes elsewhere and the ossification of the social hierarchy and legal structures contributed to the decline in trade shown on our German vacation.

Hauptmarkt (Main Market Square), Nuremberg...

The Main Market Square has been the center of activity and commerce in Nuremberg since ancient times

The artfully hand carved nativity set.

Toy figures of the birth of Jesus

In our German vacation we found a classic Christmas nativity as we know it today has its origins in early Christianity.

Jesus was born in Bethlehem; since there was nowhere for them to stay in the town, the infant was laid in a manger while angels announced his birth to a group of shepherds who worshipped him as Messiah and Lord.
