Thessaloniki, GREECE #109

A group of people standing on a pier next to a body of water.

Thessaloniki is a Greek port city on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea.

Evidence of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history remains, especially around Ano Poli, the upper town. The ruins of Roman Emperor Galerius’ 4th-century palace include the Rotunda that has been both a church and a mosque. Much of the city center was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1917. The rebuilt 20th-century city has a modern European layout in the  Greek Isles.

At the district of St Paul, northeastern of Thessaloniki, Greece dominates the majestic church dedicated to the Apostle of the Nations, just above the Apostle Paul’s Holy Water, since the area is related to his passing from Thessaloniki in 50 AD.

After the liberation of Thessaloniki, Greece, a church in his honor was constructed in this place and the Holy Water became well known. Nowadays, a modern imposing church is the proof that Apostle Paul visited Thessaloniki, preached there and brought Greeks close to Christianity.

On November 8, 1977, Andronikos discovered a pair of royal tombs from the fourth century BC which contained many objects of gold, silver, bronze, and iron, several wall frescoes, and two caskets of human bones, which he believed to be the remains of the parents of Alexander III, Philip II and his fourth wife Olympias.

The Macedon King (Philip II); who conquered all of Greece, was the father of Alexander the Great.

In 357 BC he married princess Olympias from the neighboring country of Epirus. A year later Olympias gave him a son which he named Alexander.  Philip also allowed the sons of the Macedonian nobles to receive education at the court in Pella. Here these young men would develop a fierce loyalty for the king, while the king kept their parents from interfering with his authority.

Amazing archaeological site, amazing findings and and an amazing architectural idea for the museum structure. The truth is that the museum inside is very dark in some points but the lighten exhibits do really reward you. The Royal Tombs and the findings are very impressive.
