Katakolon is a seaside town in the municipality of Pyrgos in western Elis, Greece on part of our greek cruises situated on a headland overlooking the Ionian Sea and separating the Gulf of Kyparissia from the rest of the Ionian.

Basically it’s most famous for Olympia, the ancient site where the Olympic Games were born in the 8th century BC – the reason cruise ships stop here at all.
We are doing one of those cruises to the Greek islands on a massive cruise ship that holds thousands of people that can only go to ports large enough to handle them for all the greek cruises.

I decided to skip Olympia altogether and explore Katakolon on my own.
It was the best thing for me!
So I went to a local jewelry store and traded a beautiful blue Topaz ring (that's been setting in my jewelry box for 20 years) for a beautiful necklace and bracelet that you can experience when cruising the greek islands.

Olympia: located 34 km from Katakolon cruise port. The place is the most famous site that tells the history of the Greeks.
This is the place, where the Olympic games began (back in 776 BCE). Most of the site was built during the Classical period (5th-4th centuries BCE).
The attraction with top popularity is the Temple of Zeus that you can experience when cruising the greek islands.
