The Blue Mosque was built between 1609 and 1616, by the architect Mehmet Ağa, instructed by Sultan Ahmed I.

Inside the interior domes, you can find 20,000 intricate blue tiles. These tiles give the mosque its name. They were shipped from Iznik (Nicaea), an ancient Roman town, about 100 miles (160 km) away in Ephesus (Kusadasi) Turkey.

Admission to the Blue Mosque is free.

It is visible from afar, even from the Asian side of the city across the water.


The four massive pillars – the “Elephants feet” – are massive structures. They are 16 feet in diameter and support the domes above your head.

The mosque is open for all other non Muslim visitors, however, non Muslims will not be allowed in during prayers time. It is worth going to see the red carpets, the old chandeliers and take few photos.

This spacious Roman built cistern shows off impressive Roman engineering was commissioned by Emperor Justinian, largest surviving Byzantine cistern in Istanbul and has been backdrop for many movies over time here in  Ephesus, Turkey.

The two Medusa heads, two great examples of the Roman era architecture, takes a lot of attention. Both work as the bases for two of the 336 columns located on the northwest side of the cistern. They are thought to have been brought to be used as supports for the columns at the time of construction of the cistern in Ephesus, Turkey.

These angels, called  Seraphim, are mentioned in Christian references as the keeper of heaven and the protector of God's throne. Seraphim means ‘’the burning ones’’ because of their closeness to the throne of God. The angels have 6 wings; 2 covering the feet, 2 covering the face and 2 outstretched, ready to fly.  Ephesus, Turkey

 A jumping-off point for visiting the classical ruins at nearby Ephesus (or Efes), it’s also a major cruise ship destination. Its seafront promenade, marina, and harbor are lined with hotels and restaurants. Just offshore on Pigeon Island is a walled Byzantine castle that once guarded the town, connected to the mainland via causeway.

Built into the slope of Panayır Dağı, this is the Roman reconstruction (41-117 AD) of the earlier theater built by Lysimachus. Though huge, with 25,000 seats, its ingenious engineering gives it excellent acoustics. It's still used for performances and special events.

Ephesus's city council met in this fine small theater-like council space. Opposite the Odeon are other badly-ruined structures, including the Prytaneum (city hall) and Temple of Hestia Boulaea. On the other side of some badly-ruined baths is the Magnesia (upper, southern) Gate into the Ephesus Archeological Site.

A technological wonder, with double walls to keep out the damp and moderate the extremes of temperature, it is also perhaps the most beautiful building at Ephesus, finely restored. To the right is the Gate of Augustus, a monumental arch leading to the Commercial Agora.
